The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- are physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives.
At Wilby School we have created our own bespoke scheme of work which provides our pupils with the experience and knowledge of a wide range of sports. This is achieved through the provision of a spiral skills based curriculum which ensures that all of the objectives for the national curriculum are met from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to Key Stage 2. A central focus of the scheme is to help pupils become physically literate by developing their fundamental movement skills-agility, balance and coordination. These are the building blocks that underpin the ability to play and be involved in many different sports and activities and it is therefore essential that every child masters these skills. In addition to this, the ability to move confidently and effectively can assist children to undertake everyday challenges, play and learn more effectively.
The PE curriculum provides a balanced range of activities for children through the six strands:
- Athletics.
- Dance.
- Gymnastics.
- Games.
- Outdoor and adventure activities.
- Aquatics.
Our skills progression chart shows the type and level of skills that we believe should aim to achieve in each of these strands each year.
We promote both inclusive competition and the teaching of broader essential holistic skills. As a school we hold the School Games Platinum Award and as part of this we ensure that our pupils have opportunities to participate in a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond the school day.
The School Games Mark values are: passion, self-belief, respect, honesty, determination, and teamwork. These values were developed by young people to represent the "spirit" of the School Games and how sport should be experienced in schools. At Wilby school these values underpin our whole approach to celebrate successes based on these values
All pupils are members of school House Teams and participate in intra-school sports competitions in a range of sports. They also compete against other schools demonstrating high levels of performance at both local and regional levels.
We also ensure that pupils are provided with opportunities to experience a wide range of additional sporting/ physical opportunities, through bespoke experience days and residential trips, in order to allow pupils to sample and find their own particular area of interest
